Bathroom vanity cost: custom vs store-bought

A custom vanity cost usually runs $1,800 to $6,500 for the cabinet, plus the top. Here is what that buys over a store-bought vanity, and when the cheaper option is the right one.

DWG-058.02 · Guide

A custom vanity cost in Edmonton usually sits between $1,800 and $6,500 for the cabinet, installed, before GST. The low end is a single 30 inch vanity in melamine. The high end is a 72 inch double vanity in painted MDF or wood veneer. The countertop is extra, typically a few hundred dollars to around $1,500 depending on size and material.

A store-bought vanity with a top can cost a lot less on the shelf. So the honest question is not which is cheaper, but what you get for the difference, and when the difference is worth it.

What store-bought vanities offer

Big-box and online vanities come in fixed widths, usually 24, 30, 36, 48, 60 and 72 inches, with a top and sink already fitted. Their strengths are real:

  • Low upfront price and fast availability
  • A complete package: cabinet, top, sink and sometimes a faucet
  • Easy to replace later with another standard size

Their weak points show up after a few years in a bathroom:

  • Board and edges. Many use thin particleboard with paper or thin foil wrap. Steam and splashes find any unsealed edge, and the board swells.
  • Drawers. Often only one or two real drawers, sometimes false fronts. Runners are usually basic.
  • Sizing. If your space is 41 inches, you buy a 36 and fill the gap, or squeeze in nothing at all.
  • Plumbing. Drawers are rarely cut around the drain, so the space under the sink is a single door cabinet.

What a custom vanity gets you

A custom vanity is built to your exact wall, to the inch. At Boreal we build vanity boxes from 18 to 19 mm melamine-faced board with edge banding applied on our own edge-bander, so every exposed edge is sealed. Fronts can be melamine, thermofoil, painted MDF, wood veneer or Fenix NTM.

What you actually notice day to day:

  • Drawers around the plumbing. A U-shaped top drawer wraps around the drain, so the space under the sink holds things instead of air.
  • Full-extension soft-close drawers. Blum runners, the same we use in kitchens, with a 10-year hardware warranty.
  • The right height. Standard vanities are about 32 to 34 inches tall. Custom can be 36 inches, the same as a kitchen counter, which many adults prefer.
  • A double vanity that fits. Two sinks with real space between them, and drawers in the middle.
  • Floating or floor-standing. A floating vanity, which many Edmonton homeowners ask about, is just as easy to build custom. It needs solid blocking in the wall, which we mark for your contractor.

Countertop on top

Most vanity tops are quartz. On a 22 inch deep vanity, each foot of top is roughly 1.8 square feet, so at about $90 per square foot a 48 inch quartz top with an undermount sink cut-out is in the $700–$900 range. Fenix NTM and quartzite cost more. A remnant of quartz from a larger job can lower the price when a colour you like is available. See countertops for materials.

What else goes into the bathroom budget

We build and install the vanity and top. We do not do plumbing or electrical. Plan for:

  • A plumber to disconnect the old vanity and connect the new sink, drain and faucet
  • An electrician if you add a lit mirror, outlets in a medicine cabinet or under-vanity lighting
  • Drywall and paint where the old vanity was, and backing in the wall for a floating vanity

When store-bought is the better choice

  • A rental or a quick refresh before selling
  • A standard-width space where a stock size fits within an inch or two
  • A tight budget where the cabinet matters less than the tile, fixtures or plumbing work

When custom is worth it

  • The primary bathroom you use twice a day for years
  • Odd widths, sloped ceilings, or a vanity between two walls
  • A double vanity where you want real drawer storage between the sinks
  • When you want the vanity to match kitchen cabinetry or other built-ins in the home

A custom vanity also makes later changes easier. If you replace the top or the faucet in ten years, the cabinet does not need to change, because it was built to the room rather than to a top that came in the box. And because we keep your drawings, a matching linen cabinet or mirror cabinet can be added later in the same finish.

Bathroom vanity ideas that add little to the cost

  • A tower on the counter. A shallow cabinet between two sinks holds daily items off the counter.
  • Toe-kick drawer. A low drawer in the plinth for cleaning supplies or a step stool for kids.
  • Outlets inside a drawer. For hair tools, wired by your electrician, built into our drawer layout.
  • A linen cabinet matched to the vanity. See bathroom storage and linen cabinets.
