A built-in desk starts with the chair, not the cabinets

A built-in desk can't be raised later, so we set the height for the person who uses it. Most people are comfortable at 29–30 in. with a keyboard on top. If you plan a sit-stand frame, we build a cabinet run around a gap for it instead.

Desk depth is 24 in. for a laptop, 28–30 in. for a big monitor. Uppers start 18–20 in. above the desk so the monitor fits under them, and we leave knee space at least 24 in. wide, ideally 30.

  • Grommets and a cable tray under the desk top
  • Ventilated cabinet for a router or tower PC
  • File drawers sized for letter or legal hanging files
  • Fenix NTM desk top option: matte and resists fingerprints

Home office questions

01How much does a built-in desk cost?+

A simple desk with open shelves starts around $2,500. An 8 ft wall with a desk, uppers and a file drawer stack is typically $3,000–$7,000 installed, CAD, before GST. Veneer and painted finishes cost more.

02Can you build around a window?+

Yes. Desks under windows are common. We keep the desk top below the sill and run bookcases up both sides, scribed to the wall.

03What about a standing desk?+

We leave an opening for a sit-stand frame and build cabinets on either side. A built-in top that moves isn't something we'd recommend.

04Can you add outlets in the desk?+

We cut openings for desktop power units and grommets. A licensed electrician wires any new outlets in the wall.

05Is veneer worth it for an office?+

If the room doubles as a library or a client-facing space, oak or walnut veneer looks and ages like real wood. For a busy family office, melamine is tougher and cheaper.
