Quartz for low maintenance and a uniform look; it needs no sealing. Granite for heat resistance and one-of-a-kind patterns; it needs sealing about once a year. Quartzite if you want a marble look that's much harder.
About $90 per sq ft installed, before GST. A typical kitchen with 45 sq ft and two cut-outs comes to roughly $4,000–$5,000. Mitered edges and full-height slab backsplashes add to that.
