Mudroom ideas that work in July can fail in January. These are lockers, benches and boot storage designed for snow, slush and road grit, with the sizes and materials that hold up all winter.

In Alberta the mudroom works harder than any other room from October to April. Boots come in with snow, slush and road grit. Parkas are wet. Hockey bags, toques and mitts pile up by the door. A mudroom that works in July can fail in January. These are the ideas we use when we design one for an Edmonton winter.
Start with the size of winter
Before choosing a finish, count what has to fit on a bad day:
- One parka, one lighter jacket and one set of snow pants per person
- Two to three pairs of boots and shoes per person
- Toques, mitts and scarves (they need to dry, not hide in a drawer)
- Sports bags, backpacks and the dog's gear
- A place to sit down and pull boots on
A family of four in winter needs more hooks and floor space than the same family in summer. Plan for the worst week, not the average.
Mudroom locker dimensions that work
| Element | Typical size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Locker width | 15"–18" per person | Narrower lockers will not take a parka on a hook |
| Locker depth | 16"–20" | 20" fits bulky coats; 16" for tight halls |
| Bench height | 17"–19" | Comfortable for kids and adults |
| Bench depth | 15"–18" | Room to sit without hitting the hooks |
| Hook height | about 60"–66" adults, 40"–48" kids | Two rows serve both |
| Boot space under bench | 10"–14" clear | Tall winter boots need more |
| Upper cubbies | 12"–15" high | Toques, mitts, helmets |

Mudroom ideas for wet boots and grit
A mudroom bench with storage
The bench is the centre of the room. A mudroom bench with storage below (open for boots, or a lift-up lid or drawers for small items) gives everyone a place to sit and keeps the floor clear.
Open the bottom
Closed cabinets around wet boots trap moisture. Leave the space under the bench open or use slatted shelves so air moves. Metal or plastic boot trays slide in and out for emptying.
Protect the floor and the panels
Road salt and grit scratch and stain. We keep the bottom of the lockers raised on a recessed toe kick or legs so mopping reaches under. All exposed edges are edge-banded on our own machine so meltwater cannot soak into the board. Melamine and thermofoil handle splash better than painted MDF in the bottom zone, so some clients choose a painted upper and a durable lower.
Let things dry
Hooks spaced 6" to 8" apart let wet coats dry instead of pressing together. Mesh or ventilated doors on upper cubbies dry mitts faster than solid doors. A boot dryer or a heated rail needs an outlet in the right place, so plan it early: a licensed electrician installs the outlet and we build around it.
A drop zone for the small stuff
One shallow drawer or a wall shelf with a charging spot for keys, phones and the garage remote stops the kitchen counter from becoming the mudroom.
Layouts for common Alberta homes
The back entry from the garage
Most new homes around Edmonton have a mudroom between the attached garage and the kitchen. It is often a 5 to 7 ft wall facing a laundry or pantry. Run lockers along one wall, keep the walkway at least 36" clear, and use the opposite side for a tall cabinet with doors for out-of-season gear.
The combined mudroom and laundry
Common in bungalows and newer two-storeys, and the place where laundry room storage ideas and mudroom ideas meet. Put the lockers near the door and the laundry cabinets by the machines, with a counter to fold on. A deep utility sink helps with muddy gear; a licensed plumber connects it.
The front closet only
Older homes may have no mudroom at all. A built-in bench and hook wall in the front entry, plus a reach-in closet with better shelving, can fix most of the problem. Custom closets and sliding closet doors help where a swinging door blocks the hall.

Kids, pets and gear
Families with young children need lower hooks, a cubby per child at a height they can reach, and a bench they can sit on without climbing. Labelled bins in the cubbies help the morning rush. For dogs, a pull-out drawer for leashes and treats and a spot for a water bowl near the door save a trip into the house. Hockey and ski gear is bulky and wet; a tall, ventilated cabinet or a section of the garage wall works better than the mudroom itself. Garage cabinets are a good partner for a small mudroom.
Open lockers or doors?
Open lockers are quicker to use and help coats dry. Doors hide the mess when guests come in through the back. Many families choose a mix: open lockers for daily coats, closed tall cabinets for vacuum, brooms and seasonal items. If the mudroom is visible from the kitchen, doors in the same finish as the kitchen tie the spaces together.
What it costs
Mudroom, laundry and pantry units typically run $300 to $650 per linear foot, CAD before GST, depending on material, doors and drawers. A 6 ft wall of open lockers in melamine with a bench sits near the low end; a 10 ft wall with painted doors, drawers and a tall cabinet near the top. Finishes that hide winter
Choose colours with the season in mind. Mid-tone woodgrain melamine hides grit and scuffs better than bright white. A dark lower zone with a lighter upper zone looks intentional and stays clean longer. For hardware, pick sturdy double hooks rated for heavy parkas and fix them through the back panel into a rail, not just into board. Matte black or brushed nickel hide fingerprints. If the mudroom opens into the kitchen, many families match the kitchen doors on the tall cabinets and keep the lockers simpler, which saves money where it does not show.
Mistakes to avoid
- Lockers narrower than 15". Parkas do not fit.
- A closed cabinet for boots. It smells by February.
- No seat. Kids pull boots on standing up and everything lands on the floor.
- Forgetting the door swing. The garage door and the locker run must not fight.
- White everywhere at floor level. Grit shows. A darker or woodgrain lower panel hides it.

Mudroom questions
01What are good mudroom ideas for a small entry?+
Use the wall, not the floor: a bench with open boot space under it, a row of hooks at two heights, and cubbies above. Even a 4 to 5 ft wall can hold a family's daily gear if the coats live on hooks and the boots on a tray.
02What is the best material for a mudroom bench?+
Melamine or thermofoil with every edge banded handles meltwater and grit well. Painted MDF looks great higher up but chips more easily at boot level.
03How wide should mudroom lockers be?+
15 to 18 inches per person. Narrower lockers cannot hold a winter parka on a hook.
04Can you add a boot dryer or heated rail?+
Yes, we build around them. A licensed electrician installs the outlet, and we coordinate placement with them.
